The largest jain temple in Europe

श्री शंखेश्वर पार्श्वनाथाय नमः,

Last week, I visited the most sacred place for all jains in Europe. And that prompted me to write my first ever blog. So, please be gentle and patient on this holy journey.

The place is called Wilrijk, close to Antwerp, where about 300-400 jain families have built probably the largest jain temple out side India. Jains in Antwerp are exclusively engaged in diamond business and they follow paths of Shwetambar Murti Pujak and Shwetambar Sthanakwasi sects of Jainism.

The intension of this blog is to provide as much information as possible about the temple. Here is some information about the temple.

Address :
Laarstraat 34
2610 Wilrijk
Belgium

Opening hours :
7:30 am to 11:30 am, 8:30 pm to 10:30 pm, Arati at 9:00 pm on week days,
7:30 am to 12:30 am, 8:30 pm to 10:30 pm, Arati at 9:00 pm on week ends.
(Timings may deviate about 1 hour)

From Antwerp Central station :
Bus number 31 and 17 will bring you close to the temple.
(more information required like, which direction and which stop to get down)

Contact person :
Sewa Singh - 0032 475294463

Mulnayak (the centre God) :
Shri Shankheshwar Parshvanath Bhagwan

Other Gods :
Shri Adeshwarnath Bhagwan
Shri Mahavir Swami Bhagwan
Shri Munisuvratswami Bhagwan

Facilities :
A basic facility is available for taking bath and changing clothes. Pooja clothes are also available for men. The current temple is very holy place though it is temporary. The shift to the large temple, which is under construction since few years, is expected in July 2010 following the Pranpratishtha Mahotsav. A huge Upashray is also under construction for Sthanakwasi followers. Regular classes of Pathshala and during Paryushan, also Wyakhyan take place.

I have attached some pics that I took during my visit. Kindly, add more information in your comments.

Jay Jinendra,
Riddhi Shah

    1. First understand about Jainism and then say anything. Jain Tirthankaras are not the people who made the world and control the universe. Tirthankaras were the normal people like us, who attained the highest-level ok knowledge by meditation and after attaining this highest level of knowledge they don't need to rebirth. Jain temple is a place where Jains remembers the teachings of tirthankaras and the way they shown to us, so we can also become like them.

  10. Interesting GOD indeed! I didn't know him and I'm always happy to see one more! It dilutes all the others who of course claim the ONEness status sometimes a bit too predominantly!
Human imagination is fertile in inventing those many GODS throughout history! After all if he or they is(are) omnipotent he/they can be multiple or else go through eternity in utter boredom.
The Greeks knew how to deal with that through Godly diversity. This one seems to like 'Crème Chantilly"! Very refreshing. With stawberries it's nice too!
Eternity is very long especially at the end! Woody Allen
And you know what? "I'm happy" that this GOD is non violent! Refreshing again! Keep it that way and show the ways to the rest of the "Believers"!

  20. Riddhi - Great Posting!!! I never knew that there is such a great and lovely Jain Mandir in Antwerp, Belgium. I reside in the US, but seems like I should make it sometime to Antwerp JUST for this. Great posting - and hope the newer temple to be built by July 2010 is as beautiful as this one. A great inspiration and source of knowledge for everyone around.

Je suis végétarien depuis 35 ans, j'aimerais faire connaître le Jaïnisme en France. Y a-t-il des Jaïns qui parlent français pour échanger des informations. 36. After visiting the Adinath Jain temple in Ranakpur, and being very surprised at the beauty of it. I am surprised to find there now is one so close to the place I live (The Netherlands).
Is is possible to visit, and take pictures as a non Jain? (I am a amateur photographer, and made analogue pictures in India, therefore would now like to make digital ones).
Do I need to make an apointment or can I just visit during opening hours? Of course this holy place can count on my respects in all ways.
Please let me know? Many thanks in advance, Ingrid van Kuijk, email : ingridvankuijk@hotmail.com

Another option would be to go there with an Indian friend (so I heard) - but I'd recommend to double check whether they refer to Indian Jains or any other Indian religion as well. 88. A beautiful way of explanation. I'm interested to read this kind of blog. My family was supposed to go on vacation. However, my wife caught the flu and was unable to travel. We spoke to the representative and informed him about the current situation. He suggested that we can change or cancel our travel tickets according to the official guidelines of Air France Cancellation Policy. We missed free cancellation because it can be done within 24 hours of the original booking.
